where did THAT come from?!?!

so today . . . joshua made me laugh and laugh and laugh. i laughed so long, the other kids were starting to back away from me, like "maybe someone should call the guys with the white jackets with the long arms . . . "

those of you who read my blog regularly are familiar with joshua. he is just hysterical! much of his funnyness comes from his facial expressions and body language, which is hard to convey in a blog, but usually it is his words that crack me up. he is the source of most of my funny stories this year, and i don't know what i am going to write about next year when he moves on to first grade. but for now, he is mine . . .

recently i taught the kids in our class a chant. chants and songs are the preschool teacher's saving grace, because the name of the game in preschool is "keep them occupied." when four and five year olds have nothing to do, the classroom gets loud and chaotic and behaviors can escalate. so as a teacher, you need to be able to engage them in an activity if you find yourself with 5 minutes to fill before recess or 10 minutes until lunch time. sometimes a book or an impromptu discussion will do the trick, but i also like to use songs and chants.

i taught them a chant that goes like this: (now you have to think rhythmically here--we start out by slapping our hands on our thighs to the beat until our hands become involved in the motions.) ok, here we go~

hello
my name is So
and i work in a button factory
i have a spouse
and two kids
one day my boss said to me
"Sooooo are you busy?
i said, "noooo"
"then push this button with your right hand"

each subsequent verse adds another body part, until they are using their whole body to "push buttons." the last verse is pushing the button with their tongue, which results in very funny sounding speech (try talking with your tongue hanging out,) and then they laugh and it's over. they love to do this!

so this afternoon we were in the classroom, and joshua announced that he needed to go to the bathroom. fine, i said, go ahead. we have a bathroom in our class, so we can hear him in there and he is ALWAYS singing or talking or something while he uses the facilities. today, this is what i heard:

hello
my name is So
and i work in a button factory
i have a spouse
and two kids
one day my boss said to me
"Sooooo are you busy?"
i said, "noooo."
"then you're fired!"

he said it right in rhythm, and i thought i would die laughing! jonathan just looked at me like "what is the matter with you?" he finally asked, "what is so funny?" i said, "joshua--did you hear what he said?" to which jonathan replied, "oh. yes, we changed that a few days ago."

and i laughed some more.

again i say, five year old brains are the funniest thing . . .
